Synthetic Aperture LIDAR for Space Domain Awareness
Spectra Defence is developing Synthetic Aperture LIDAR technology to support the next generation of Space Domain Awareness.
Our aim is to enable higher-resolution optical imaging and characterisation of satellites, space assets and debris using compact coherent sensing systems and advanced computational imaging.
The challenge
Space is becoming more congested, contested and strategically important. Defence, security and commercial operators increasingly need better ways to understand what is happening in orbit — not just detecting that an object is present, but helping to characterise, identify and assess it.
Existing systems can be limited by aperture size, range, resolution, lighting conditions and access to suitable observation windows. Spectra Defence is working to address this gap with an active optical approach designed for improved image formation from small-aperture systems.
Our technology
Synthetic Aperture LIDAR combines coherent laser sensing with synthetic aperture processing to generate high-resolution information from moving platforms or moving targets.
Spectra Defence’s approach builds on deep experience in optical coherence, laser imaging, interferometry and computational reconstruction. The technology is being developed for future defence and dual-use space applications where improved image resolution, compact hardware and operational flexibility are critical.
Potential applications include:
Space Domain Awareness
satellite inspection and characterisation
monitoring of high-value orbital assets
support to resilient space operations
dual-use space safety and security applications
NATO DIANA 2026
Spectra Defence has been selected for the NATO DIANA 2026 Challenge Programme under the Resilient Space Operations challenge area.
Through the programme, we are working with DIANA’s network of experts, mentors and test centres to refine our Synthetic Aperture LIDAR technology, validate its performance and shape it around operational needs.
Participation in NATO DIANA provides an important pathway for engagement with end users, defence stakeholders, test and evaluation partners, and potential adoption routes across NATO and Allied nations.
Partner with us
We welcome conversations with defence users, space operators, prime contractors, test and evaluation organisations, investors and strategic partners interested in next-generation Space Domain Awareness.
